Endless Opportunities: CIS of Atlanta Takes Students to Washington D.C.

February 7, 2018

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” This quote, spoken by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., provides a great example of what Communities in Schools of Atlanta believes. True education opens the doors to opportunities so the American Dream can be realized for everyone.

We recognize that there is a need in the community to reach our students and show them that education breeds endless possibilities. Last month, CIS of Atlanta took 5 deserving young men from Atlanta Public Schools, Clayton County Public Schools and Fulton County Schools to our nation’s capital. The students took a tour of the White House, Department of Justice, National Museum of African American History and Culture, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and a historically black school, Howard University.

The students also visited U.S Representative John Lewis’s office. They learned about his involvement in black history as a civil rights leader, his chairmanship of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and how he serves Georgia today. The students enjoyed their experience and their eyes were opened to new career opportunities.

Michael Solomon, 12th grader at Booker T. Washington High School said, “I really enjoyed the trip to D.C. and love my professional suits CIS purchased. I was a little nervous for my first time flying on a plane. It was an honor to visit the White House and kick it with Frank and the guys. I feel blessed that I was chosen to experience the good life outside Atlanta.”

CIS of Atlanta continues to work hard to close the gap in education and equality. About 95% of CIS of Atlanta’s students are African-American. The main goal is to make sure these students are equipped with the tools they need to graduate. One way to reach this goal is to continue to open doors of excitement and opportunity. We show students that they can become the next Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Representative John Lewis or even president. Nothing is out of reach.
