Atlanta Falcons Jonathan Babineaux recognizes local students
Hometown favorites partner with Communities In Schools of Atlanta for annual youth-focused awards luncheon
Atlanta – May 10, 2012 – This year marks forty years of service for award-winning dropout prevention organization Communities In Schools (CIS) of Atlanta. Atlanta Falcons star defensive tackle, Jonathan Babineax, and the ever energized Harry the Hawk were on hand to help the organization celebrate local students at its 8th Annual Choose Success Awards Luncheon earlier
Antonio's quietly polite demeanor did not seem fitting with a life on the streets. But his involvement with one of Atlanta's harshest gangs was out of a need for money, rather than an innate inclination for bad behavior.
Carl Buddig, Councilman Aaron Watson and Clifford the Big Red Dog helped CIS of Atlanta Celebrate Literacy During the Be A Reader Tour
On October 4th, Carl Buddig and Reading Is Fundamental brought the Be A Reader Tour to Atlanta's Benteen Elementary School through a partnership with Communities In Schools of Atlanta. CIS of Atlanta operates the largest Reading Is Fundamental program in the state of Georgia, distributing thousands of new books to students in its partner schools each year. The ten city Be A Reader Tour and literacy initiative, sponsored by Carl Buddig, is designed to nourish young minds through literacy. The chicago-based company has donated $100,000 to support Reading Is Fundamental as a part of their commitment to literacy.
Atlanta City Councilman Aaron Watson and CIS of Atlanta's Executive Director, Patty Pflum, read "Max for President," to a captive audience of Benteen Elementary School students during the event. Following the story time, the excited group of third graders took advantage of the opportunity to ask special guest, Councilman Watson, questions about his life. When asked about his educational and career paths, Watson shared, "Reading and always seizing opportunities to learn were two of the most important things to shape my life. Read whenever you can. And, never stop learning."
The Be A Reader Tour stop at Benteen included a visit from Clifford the Big Red Dog, who helped students select books for their home libraries. CIS thanks Clifford, Councilman Watson, Henry Coleman, Carl Buddig, Reading Is Fundamental, Scholastic and the students, faculty and staff of Benteen Elementary School for a wonderful event!
