Communities In Schools of Atlanta Receives $50,000 Wachovia Grant

News Atlanta, GA--At a February 12th luncheon with leadership representing several school systems in the Metro Atlanta area, the Wachovia Foundation announced $250,000 in grant funding for education. Communities In Schools (CIS) of Atlanta was among five groups to receive a generous grant of $50,000. CIS of Atlanta will use the funding to support its High School Graduation Coach initiative for Atlanta Public Schools. Through this program, Graduation Coaches identify students who are most at risk for dropping out and develop both academic and nonacademic services to get them on track for graduation.

Students at Peachcrest Elementary School Motivated by New Incentive Room

dharrison04CIS Program Coordinator Deon Harrison talks with students.CIS of Atlanta helped Peachcrest Elementary School stock its new Incentive Room with with a variety of goodies such as school supplies, candy, books, toys, games and even bicycles.

Students can purchase items by building up points throughout the week for good grades, perfect attendance, and proper conduct. The points are converted into “dollars” that the students use to buy the prizes they want.

Wally Amos Introduces New Storybook Characters at Venetian Hills Elementary

Famous AmosWally Amos might be out of the cookie-making business, but he’s still pursuing one of his greatest passions – childhood literacy.

Amos – founder of “Famous Amos Chocolate Chip Cookies” and a Communities In Schools national board member – and his wife Christine have authored a line of children’s books, “The Adventures of Chip and Cookie.”

Borders Books and 94.9 Lite FM Sponsor Book Drive for CIS

cliffordClifford the Big Red Dog visited Borders to Promote Book DriveBorders Books & Music partnered with 94.9 Lite FM radio station to sponsor a Back To School Book Drive for Communities In Schools (CIS) of Atlanta during the month of August. Patrons at 12 metro area Borders stores purchased and donated more than 10,000 books during the Drive. Radio station 94.9 Lite FM helped with on-air promotions. CIS will distribute the donated books to CIS-supported schools in Atlanta, DeKalb County and Cobb County.
