Antonio's quietly polite demeanor did not seem fitting with a life on the streets. But his involvement with one of Atlanta's harshest gangs was out of a need for money, rather than an innate inclination for bad behavior.

Atlanta, Georgia. Communities In Schools (CIS) of Atlanta, The Villages at Carver Family YMCA, JaBarrCo Company, Project GRAD, and the P.T.S.A. of Price Middle School joined forces to host "A Community Resource Fair: Education, Housing, Employment and Wellness” on January 20, 2011, at The Villages at Carver Family YMCA. This first-time event was free to the public and provided information and resources in the areas of education, employment and housing for metro Atlanta area youth and adults. Jordan Roberts and Martin Fuller, both residents of nearby Villages of Carver Apartments attended after hearing about the event through employees at the YMCA.
Karima Norwood attended the community fair with her two young children to get information on college. “I had both of my children before the age of twenty and didn’t continue my education after high school. I made a point to stop by the fair so I could get information from the colleges that are here and prepare to get into school for the 2011-2012 school year,” said Norwood. “If this event was not going on, I would have to call or visit each school individually and that takes a lot of time that I don’t have as a working mother. This event has everything at my fingertips. I hope this event happens every year and people take advantage of the information provided,” Norwood added.
“The community needs events like this one on a regular basis,” said Razikiwe Adisa, CIS of Atlanta Senior Program Coordinator at Price Middle School. Community partnerships between Communities In Schools of Atlanta, our sponsors, and vendors are so necessary for the community. Adisa said, “We plan to continue this event on a yearly basis. Giving back is what Communities In Schools of Atlanta does and it feels very good.”
Communities In Schools (CIS) of Atlanta has been surrounding students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life since 1972. Through partnerships with Atlanta Public Schools, Project GRAD and DeKalb County Schools, CIS of Atlanta is impacting more than 46,000 students at 74 partner schools during the 2010-2011 school year. CIS of Atlanta’s award-winning dropout prevention programs focus on improving student attendance and behavior, increasing parental involvement and ensuring that families have access to important resources.
