CIS AtlantaAtlanta, Georgia.  Atlanta City Councilman Michael Julian Bond declared May “Communities In Schools of Atlanta Month” during the nonprofit agency’s 7th Annual Choose Success Awards Luncheon earlier this month.

“The Atlanta City Council is honored to recognize Communities In Schools of Atlanta for its effective dropout prevention programs and positive impact on the community,” said Bond. “I have seen the amazing work of Communities In Schools firsthand. What this organization does to empower students to stay in school and achieve in life is powerful.” Bond’s sentiments about the thirty-nine year old nonprofit are supported by the results of an in-depth, five-year evaluation which recently concluded that Communities In Schools is one of the most effective dropout prevention organizations in the entire country.

Michael Julian Bond is the chairman of CIS of Atlanta’s 2nd Annual Family Literacy Celebration which took place on May 19th at CIS partner school, Cleveland Avenue Elementary. Last year’s event attracted more than 1,000 students and parents. CIS also hosted The Race to Win (May 13th); the West End Performance Learning Center Celebration of Seniors (May 13th); and, the 7th Annual Choose Success Awards Luncheon (May 4th) as a part of CIS of Atlanta Month.

We are so very thrilled to have the opportunity to share our programs and the power of education with the greater community through this dynamic partnership with the Atlanta City Council,” said CIS of Atlanta Executive Director Patricia Pflum. “We believe in engaging all sectors of the community to support the needs of local students, families and schools. The Atlanta City Council continues to be a fantastic champion for CIS and the young people we serve.”
