Communities In Schools of Atlanta currently partners with schools through five key programs:
- Project GRAD Atlanta
Project GRAD Atlanta is a research-based, school-community collaborative designed to improve student academic performance, and increase the numbers of young people graduating from high school and attending college. CIS implements the Family Support Component of Project GRAD. CIS staff in GRAD schools offer guidance, counseling, community outreach, and family support services to all students, especially those experiencing academic difficulties or family issues. Project GRAD Atlanta was initiated in 2000 and now impacts more than 16,000 students in 27 Atlanta schools, including 18 elementary schools, six middle schools and three high schools.
- West End Academy Performance Learning Center (PLC)
CIS partners with Atlanta Public Schools to operate the West End Academy PLC. This school serves 75 or more students annually in grades 11 and 12 who are at risk of dropping out of school because they are not succeeding in the regular school environment. At the PLC, students have access to individualized, on-line curricula so they can work at their own pace. They are also matched with career mentors, and have special opportunities to participate in job shadowing, internships, and service learning projects. In addition, CIS sponsors a college scholarship fund for PLC graduates.
- CIS in DeKalb County Schools
CIS provides a variety of support programs at ten schools in DeKalb County, including nine elementary schools and one middle school. Services brought to DeKalb schools through CIS include tutoring programs, structured incentive programs, links to health and human services, book distribution programs, summer enrichment activities, and events designed to encourage parents' involvement in their child's education.
- ARCH Performing Arts Initiative
In November 2004, CIS of Atlanta took over ARCH Productions (which had previously operated as a separate organization). ARCH provides an after-school program at two high schools and has a repertoire of three productions designed to reach audiences in grades K-12. Each production addresses major risk factors facing youth, providing concrete information on the consequences and alternatives to negative choices.
- CIS Graduation Coaches
CIS is launching a new partnership with Atlanta Public Schools to provide full-time Graduation Coaches to every regular high school in the system. This adds an additional 8,885 students to those already served in the Project GRAD high schools. Graduation Coaches will identify students in each school who are most at risk of dropping out and develop both academic and nonacademic services to keep them in school and on track for graduation.
